Oppo A1K Review

The Oppo device is pretty affordable. You can purchase it for around Rs.17,500 island wide. Considering its price, its features are worth it.

The handset is thin. Its dimensions are 154.5 mm x 73.8 mm x 8.4 mm. Oppo made its sides very ergonomic, so holding it won’t hurt your palms.

I’m a fan of heavy mobiles – they feel more premium. The handset comes in at 170 grams which is a decent weight.

All phones these days are large. The Oppo device is no exception. It has a 6.1-inch front.

Being so affordable, it shouldn’t surprise you that it was made from plastic. The thing is, the plastic isn’t high-quality. You’ll easily be able to tell how affordable the mobile is.

If you’re expecting to pick the unit up in one of many colours, you’ll be disappointed. You can only purchase it in a black or red.

Look across its sides, you’ll find a 3.5 mm headphone jack as well as a microSD slot. The phone comes with decent storage options, which we’ll discuss in a bit. The ability to expand its storage means the sky is the limit.

There is no fingerprint sensor. You’ll have to use old-fashioned passcodes to keep the device secure. As you can imagine, face-unlock isn’t a feature you get either.

The A1K has a big screen. You’ll be able to immerse in whatever you’re watching. However, the panel on its front isn’t the most vibrant. It’s just IPS LCD. More affordable mobiles have the panel, so its presence isn’t a surprise.

Oppo placed Gorilla Glass 3 on its front. This means that it can handle scratches and scruffs.

There’s barely any bezel action going on. You’re looking at a unit with an 80.1% screen-to-body ratio. However, if you look closely, you might notice some blurriness. Its pixel resolution is 720 x 1560 pixels. If its screen was smaller, the resolution would’ve cut it.

We all know how bright it can get outdoors in Sri Lanka. If you’re constantly outside, you might have an issue – the A1K’s display isn’t bright enough to handle glare.

Let’s talk about its OS. The A1K released in 2019 so it runs Android 9 out of the box. You might be asking yourself – can its insides be upgraded to the latest Android 11? This is sadly not possible. Considering Android 11 has a lot of superb security features, this is a shame.

Android would be powered via Oppo’s proprietary Color OS. It’s one of the most customizable UI around. But it has so many themes that it can be laggy. Bloatware is an issue you’ll also have to deal with.

The chipset housed is the Helio P22.

Here’s the deal:

It can’t handle extensive tasks. The processor is pretty basic. But what can you expect? The A1K is quite cheap. Due to the nature of its chipset, it shouldn’t surprise you that gaming won’t be possible.

How is its RAM and ROM? As mentioned, you’ll be met with a microSD slot. The storage you’ll be getting out of the box would be 32 GB. And the memory would be 2 gigs. With that much RAM, apps won’t force close. That being said, opening extensive tasks might be slow.

Let’s talk about its battery. You’re looking at a phone with a 4,000 mAh unit. The battery size results in it fully draining in around a day with normal use. If you’re going to use it for extensive tasks, it will fully drain in around half a day.

As the device was made from plastic, you’d think its battery can be removed. This is sadly not possible.

You’ll be charging the handset via regular 10 W charging. Get a good book ready, it’ll take over 2 hours to fully charge. Considering the unit’s price, you can’t be mad that it doesn’t come with reverse or wireless charging. As it’s so cheap, don’t be disappointed that it doesn’t come with fast charging either.

How does it perform in the camera department? Well, there are single shooters on its front and back. Its selfie camera consists of a 5 MP lens – it takes shots that are far from colour-accurate. In low light, the pictures you take wouldn’t be that great.

If you’re wondering whether its front camera comes with LED flash, know that it doesn’t.

The device’s rear set-up doesn’t take the most vibrant pictures in general. But for its price, I think it’s decent. It consists of a single 8 MP sensor. In dim settings, there is a bright LED flash to use.
